The Slate Shed, B and B at Graig Wen, Snowdonia, Wales

areas & activities

Walk directly through our 45 acres of wild woodland and meadows to the edge of the Mawddach Estuary and Mawddach Trail.  The stunning waterside path from Dolgellau right over the iconic bridge into Barmouth is a 15km disused railway line so it’s a superb flat path ideal for walking or cycling.

A few minutes away you can go horse-riding on sandy beaches and paddling in clean water, mountain biking at Coed-y-Brenin or kayaking and white-water rafting. Harlech Castle, Portmeirion, the Ffestinniog steam railway are within easy reach. You can walk for hours and see just mountains, sky and sheep. We can help you with ideas of things to do whatever the time of year or weather. Watch our video guides and keep an eye on our Graig Wen Facebook page and blog for information about activities taking place here.

Our top tips for days out

Walk or borrow a bike for the Mawddach Trail to the George III pub or Barmouth with its sandy beach, fish and chips and ice cream parlour. Catch Emily's ferry back over the estuary to Fairbourne.

Climb up Arthog waterfalls and on up to Cregennan Lakes or Cadair Idris.

Take a scenic mountain and coast drive visiting Dolgellau's boutique shops, Corris Craft Centre Centre, Machynlleth galleries and market.  Stop at Aberedovey for lunch and a stroll on the beach.

Climb the battlements of Harlech Castle then take high tea at Portmeirion – the Italianate fantasy village made famous in The Prisoner cult TV show. Take an underground tour through an abandoned Welsh slate mine.

Or just sit on our terrace, sipping a drink from the honesty bar and watching the woodpeckers.
